A Tupac biopic had been in the works long before Straight Outta Compton became the surprise smash of the summer.

But now the public and the movie industry are even more thirsty for what has the potential to be a mega-hit.

That is if it ever  happens. The project has struggled with development issues since its inception, and earlier this year director John Singleton was replaced by Carl Franklin.

Now Franklin's out, and director Benny Boom is in.

Boom has an impressive resume in music videos. He's been behind visuals for everyone from 50 Cent to Nas to Lil Wayne to Nicki Minaj. However, his movie credits are just 2009 comedy Next Day Air and a direct-to-video flick called S.W.A.T.: Firefight that  nobody watched.

The pressure is on to get the Tupac biopic going, because if it isn't in production by the end of this year the music rights revert back to Shakur’s mother, Afeni Shakur.

Do you think the 44-year old has what it takes to take on Tupac?

I am blessed with the opportunity of a lifetime. Telling the story of this revolutionary, artist, visionary, genius, soldier! I will make him proud and uphold the legacy.
