T.I. did The Breakfast Club this morning to promote his album Dime Trap, which drops tonight. During the interview, he confessed he passed on singing Drake because he didn't think his emo style would catch on.
The revelation came after a discussion of Drake's old buddy Meek Mill, who Tip lost from his Grand Hustle label when he was locked up on drug charges in late 2010.
That led to a question of whether Tip lost any other artists when he was away for almost a year. T.I. said not really, but added he did pass on signing Drake because of the "deep sleep of my success."
"I passed on Drake. You know, it was Drake before the beard," he explained. "Bare-faced Drake, you dig what I'm saying? It just hadn't caught all the way up yet. That type of music, that sound of music, the emo sound. It wasn't necessarily prevalent at the time. So, I didn't see the curve. Just like I didn't think skinny jeans was going to happen."
Being a diligent interviewer, CTG immediately asked if that was why Drake was in Atlanta that time T.I.'s friend peed on Drake over a movie theater seat. (The incident actually happened in LA in 2010.)
T.I. wanted no part of that question, and claimed no recollection.
