Supreme Court Slaps Down [Rap] Genius's Lawsuit Against Google

by HHL JT

The Supreme Court dealt the ultimate blow to Genius (formally Rap Genius)'s lawsuit against Google for stealing their content by dismissing it this morning.

In 2019, Genius sued the search engine giant in New York State for copying and posting Genius's transcribed lyrics at the top of Google's search results without permission, keeping traffic that would have otherwise gone to Genius's site.

Genius, which crowdsources lyrics and annotations, first suspected Google of stealing when its lyrics for Desiigner's hit "Panda" were exactly the same as the ones posted on the Genius site.

So Genius started putting secret messages in their transcribed lyrics, including one that read 'RED HANDED' in Morse code.

Google argued that Genius doesn't hold the copyrights to the lyrics so they can't claim they were stolen from them.

The Supreme Court agreed.
