Superstar Pride was the hottest young rapper in the game for a moment.

Earlier this year, there was talk of a major label bidding war over the Mississippi rapper after his single "Painting Pictures" cracked the top 20 on Apple and Spotify, quite a feat for an unsigned and largely unknown artist.

Now the 20-year-old could be spending the rest of  his life in prison.

Last week, police say Pride shot and killed his barber,  40-year-old Marcus Wheatle.

Wheatle's grandmother witnessed the murder.

"The young man was shooting at him and he finally shot him down. He shot about three times after he fell and he walked over to me and he pointed the gun at me and asked if I was going to tell it." Wheatley explained, "And he came back out here and fired a last shot in his head."

According to the grandmother, Pride was angry that her grandson wouldn't accompany him to California for a music video shoot.

The police are less sure about a motive.

"Right now this is a puzzle. We don’t know why Cadarrius Pride shot Marcus Wheatley. They were friends and had known each other a long time. We are interviewing people and asking questions and sooner or later the truth is going to come out," said Panola County Sheriff Shane Phelps.

According to Phelps, Pride's family had been worried about Pride's mental health in the days before the shooting.

He is being held without bail.
