Nicki Minaj really stood up for her ex Meek Mill when she spoke at his probation violation hearing in 2015.
At the time, the MMG artist was accused of traveling without permission. But Nicki argued he would follow the court’s guidelines more precisely if they were better communicated.
“Right now there’s no one that really tells him what he can do. I don’t even think he has an idea of, you know, what you would want to see him do or how we could all help in Philly,” she told the judge. “You know, we both have a strong fan base in Philadelphia. I really wish we could team up and go to the schools, speak to the kids, do free shows here, because he’s such a great person. Like his lawyer said, ‘He always credits you with saving his life, you know?’ He definitely knows that you’ve given him a chance to achieve his dreams and to take care of his family.”
Nicki also denied an accusation from the judge that Meek violated the travel restrictions placed on him just to hang out with her.
“I know that you look on my Instagram and stuff like that, but I would be a fool to ask someone that I love to jeopardize his freedom to be with me,” she explained. “We’re going to be together regardless. I can fly anywhere he’s at.”
During another part of the hearing, the “Anaconda” rhymer was asked why Meek stayed with her in New York during Fashion Week. She explained he was actually supposed to be in Miami for a show, but his engineer couldn’t make the trip so he didn’t go.
“So we were like, ‘Why would he fly to Miami and lose money and fly an entire entourage there?” asked Nicki. “He’s never purposely does anything or ever goes purposely against the rules or his violations. He would never want to be away from his son and lose freedom just for a show or to be around me. Absolutely not.”
Nicki also asked the judge not to lock Meek up since he could be far more helpful to people as a free man.
Meek ultimately served 90 days of house arrest on those charges. But that's a lot better than the 2 -4 years he got after his latest hearing. Maybe he could have used a little Nicki then too.
