In many ways, Dave Chappelle's R. Kelly '(I Wanna) Piss On You' spoof began a process which led to Surviving R. Kelly and Kelly's impending banishment from the entertainment industry.
The 2003 sketch didn't go over well with Kelly at the time. According to Chappelle's former collaborator Neal Brennan, Kells was so pissed at the mockery he sent his goons after Chappelle.
People were mad last week that we did an R. Kelly sketches 15 years ago. Here's me explaining comedy to them. pic.twitter.com/FQoxIALqkr

“R. Kelly wanted to fight Dave,” Brennan said. “Literally, his goons stepped to Dave in Chicago and Dave’s goons intervened. The goons negotiated.”
Brennan also pushed back on the notion that they normalized Kelly by mocking him.
“So the idea that we somehow normalize this ... we also did a white supremacist sketch,” Brennan said. “I don’t think we normalized white supremacy. Our job is to poke fun at things, and even if it’s bleak we still poke fun at it. We’re trying to humiliate a guy who’s known for peeing on… it’s insane.”
