The 60th Grammy Awards are setting up to be a big day for Hip Hop.
But they won't be a big day for A Tribe Called Quest.
The veteran group was shut out of nominations, even though their critically acclaimed 2016 album We Got It From Here… Thank You 4 Your Service was eligible for this year's awards.
Group member Q-Tip was especially hot about the snub because the Recording Academy had the group play during last year's award show.
Tip raged about how it all went down in a very rare Instagram appearance.
“After y’all got us out there to perform last year and close the shit and you don’t give us no nominations?” he questions. “I’m tired of fucking biting my tongue all the time and trying to be nice and shit. I’mma say the shit that nigga always be saying, and don’t be fucking saying it. Yes, I’m hot — get off my lawn, whatever!”
Tip also makes it clear that this being the blackest collection of Grammy nominations ever does nothing for him.
“Y’all think it’s some kind of caveat that no white man is nominated for no major categories,” he railed. “We were the most Black-cultured group out. That’s all we stood on. This last album we put out — the last Tribe album — it stands with everybody else’s shit that’s up there.”
The Grammy elibility period runs from October 1st to September 30th. That can sometimes put albums that were released in the fourth quarter of the year -- as Tribe's was -- at a disadvantage.
That being said, Adele's 25 won Best Album at last year's Grammy Awards despite dropping in November of 2015.
Does Tip have a legit gripe? Here are the five albums nominated for Best Album:
Awaken, My Love! — Childish Gambino
4:44 — Jay-Z
DAMN. — Kendrick Lamar
Melodrama — Lorde
24K Magic — Bruno Mars
