Method Man has a simple solution for this.

The old head dropped this piece of advice during his interview with Math Hoffa.
“I always felt like you can’t sign to somebody who still trying to be an artist,” Meth explained. “It’s hard. They can’t give you the time or attention that you probably need and deserve unless you are your own machine.”
Meth did say a huge artist like Drake might have the resources to pull off being a label boss, but that was exception.
