It started a meme, which went viral on TikTok, Soundcloud and Twitter.
Soon after, Lil Nas X's Nine Inch Nails sampling country trap track "Old Town Road" caused controversy when Billboard booted it from their country charts because it seemed like Nas X was mocking the genre.
Country star Billy Ray Cyrus disagreed and jumped on the remix. That track quickly hit number one on the much more important Hot 100, and it's been there for 17 straight weeks, the most ever. It had been tied with "Despacito" from Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee and Justin Bieber and"One Sweet Day" by Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men at 16 weeks.
It may not be the greatest song ever. But it's been on top longer than any other song ever has and it may have the most interesting backstory of any other megahit.
