Led By Jay Z, Hip Hop Dominates State-By State List Of Favorite Musical Artists

by HHL Editors

Hip Hop had a tough year in 2014 in terms of album sales. Brutal, really. But folks are still streaming their favorite rap stars' singles.

In fact The Echo Nest, an analytics company that compiles music information for streaming sites like Spotify, just put out a state-by-state map of the most streamed artists in 2014, with rappers taking 43 of the 50 nifty.

Jay Z had the most state wins with 20 -- dominating east of the Mississippi River. Drake was the man in the Southwest but don't ask us why. Then Macklemore and Ryan Lewis claimed a large but underpopulated contiguous region between their home state of Washington and Iowa.

Eminem wasn't most played in Michigan; that was Jay Z. But Shady claimed the rural states of West Virginia, North Dakota and Alaska. Those were the only four Hip Hop artists to take a state.

Surprised by the results?
