When 2022 wraps up and the music pundits are discussing the year's best albums, Kendrick Lamar's Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers is surely to be among them.
The album has gotten an incredibly high amount of praise, something that K Dot talked about in a new interview with W. He also explained everything he went through to make the LP.
“I’m not even the same person I was yesterday,” said Kendrick. “That’s what keeps me creative. I have so much discipline as far as repetition. I don’t give a f*ck if it’s a thousand push-ups or pull-ups or whatever, but it’s always that extra 5 percent. I’m like, 'What am I on today? What’s going to be the evolution for myself today?' ... I’ve had rewards for my other albums in different ways, whether it was accolades, whether it was the Pulitzer, whether it was the Grammys, this one is the reward for humanity, for me.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Kendrick said that he kept himself away from friends and family while writing the LP, because he didn't want anyone's words or opinions to hinder his creative process.
“It was tough for me," he admitted. “I had to reap whatever consequences came behind that and also be compassionate and show empathy if they were hurt by it."
Would you call Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers the year's best album? If not, then which one?
