Jay Z's Roc Nation Sports Splits With Talent Agency Giant CAA

by HHL Editors

When Jay Z's Roc Nation sports agency made high profile gets like Robinson Cano and Kevin Durant they weren't doing it alone.

The signings were part of a partnership with CAA, one of the biggest talent agencies in the world. That partnership is now over.

"Roc Nation Sports and CAA Sports have recently concluded their two-year partnership. Roc Nation Sports and CAA Sports are two of the premier agencies and they will continue their high levels of client service to the world’s top athletes," according to a statement. “Going forward, they will each focus their efforts on their own business opportunities and clientele."

The joint-signed athletes will now presumably have to decide which agency to stick with.

"If you’re any type of client, the smart thing to do is to stick with the most powerful agencies, CAA and IMG," Robert Tuchman, president of sports marketing agency GoViva, told The New York Post. “It’s much harder for people who are trying to build a business on their own by representing two or three people."

No definitive word on what caused the split, but sources told the Post that CAA thought Roc Nation was getting too competitive with them.

Earlier this year Roc Sports and boxing promoter Gary Shaw ended a similar partnership.

It's unclear what this all means for the future of Roc Sports.  It could either be the first steps to domination or to irrelevancy.
