In a 2014 interview, Ashanti she confirmed a rumor and suggested that she sang some of Jennifer Lopez's parts on the 2001 Ja Rule/Lopez smash hit "I'm Real."
"I demoed the record for her," Ashanti said on No Judgment Zone. "And they kept my hook and, you know, they kept some of the backgrounds and ad libs and stuff like that. And it was funny, it was bittersweet because I was really excited 'cause it was J.Lo. But I was so mad at Irv. I was like, ‘You know I wanted that record!’ … I was so mad, but I was happy at the same time because it was J.Lo.”
A Watch What Happens Live caller asked Ja Rule about that during the Murder Inc spitter's recent appearance. At first, he completely denied it.
“No, that’s not true,” Ja said when asked if Ashanti had done some of J. Lo's most famous vocals.
But ...
“So I wrote ‘I’m Real’ for Jennifer Lopez,” Ja explained when pressed. “And I sung the original version of it as a reference, but I sound terrible, of course. ... Ashanti then sung the reference for Jennifer Lopez.”
“When they mixed down the record, Irv [Gotti] left some of the vocals underneath. … She has some vocals underneath, I believe. And that is the rumor. I don’t even know if it’s really true.”
Ja concluded by saying he can't be 100 percent whose vocals are on the record because he isn't the guy who mixed it.
