Dr. Dre is a big part of the N.W.A biopic Straight Outta Compton. He's getting a producer credit on it, he's been involved in its promotion, and he's hinted that he is "working on something" for the soundtrack.
Of course, he was also member of N.W.A.
But when Dre first heard about the project, he was less than excited.
"I was worried about it at the beginning," Dre said during an interview with Real 92.3's Big Boy earlier this week. "As a matter of fact, I didn't even wanna do the movie. Cube actually quarterbacked it. He went out and got the first draft of the script done, I read it and was like, OK, we can work with this; we can turn this into something. And then when [director] Gary Grey got on board, that was it. I was in." "I was just nervous about putting a blemish on our legacy. The story had to be told right. And it’s incredible. I’m really excited about it. We had our ups and downs with the filming process, but now, the edit is almost done, we’re working on music and what have you. I think everybody is gonna appreciate it."Dre added that he hopes the movie will "inspire" people.
As for the ups and downs Dre is talking about ... Well, the movie has been kicking around since 2009, so it hasn't been the smoothest of processes. (Then there was the recent Suge Knight murder debacle.)
But that all seems to be in the past, and Straight Outta Compton is scheduled for August 14, 2015.
