DJ Booth Drops Competing Freshman List To XXL

XXL introduced their annual Freshman list in 2007.

This year DJ Booth is taking on XXL's Freshman List hegemony with a Freshman list of their own, which they dropped just prior to finding out the XXL list.

They started with the 79 artists XXL were considering, and then cut it to the 33 who had at least one million monthly listeners on Spotify.

Then they eliminated Juice WRLD (too popular to be a true Freshman) and Shady Records' Boogie (too old at 29 and three previous mixtapes.)

That left them with Blueface, ThaBaby, Gunna, Megan Thee Stallion, Rico Nasty, Rody Ricch, Tierra Wack, YBN Cordae, Valee and Young Nudy for their ten Freshmen.

XXL had Blue Face, ThaBaby, Gunna, Megan Thee Stallion, Rico Nasty, Rody Ricch, Tierra Wack, YBN Cordae, Comethazine, Lil Mosey and YK Osiris for their 11.

In other words, they were pretty similar.

Besides a plethora of exciting new albums, June will also bring the latest XXL Freshman Class: an annual collective of 10 of the most notable and prolific “newcomers” to the hip-hop industry. Unfortunately, with artist selections, name-brand popularity and major-label influence have taken great precedence over the past few years.
