It could be said that Los Angeles is now the most successful city when it comes to rap music and it's no longer Atlanta.
Not only has Kendrick Lamar dominated 2024, Tyler, The Creator released his successful Chromakopia album. Plus, Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre have Hip Hop buzzing with the release of their forthcoming LP, Missionary.
But the way DJ Akademiks sees it, West Coast rap isn't as popular as some might believe, saying much of it doesn't leave California.
He specifically talked about some of the up-and-coming L.A. rappers like Lefty GunPlay, Peysoh, and Dody6.

"The majority of y’all underground, coming up the ranks artists, their music don’t go past California," said Ak. "That’s not a diss, it’s reality. Actually, it’s a props to the West Coast, because y’all could have an underground scene that nobody outside of California listens to. Like, literally, nobody."
But Ak did name one mainstream artist from Cali who he says doesn't make mainstream music.
"YG’s music now, I don’t know if it leaves California," he told his followers.
What's your opinion on Ak's theory?
