Dave East bought himself a whole lot of trouble in 2019 when he said that he didn't like Lil Nas X's song "Old Town Road." He was called homophobic for it since Nas X is gay and was heavily criticized.
“This f*cking ‘Old Town Road’ sh*t is f*cking wack," said the New York rapper back then. "I don’t know what the f*ck is going on with Hip Hop or rap but… I ain’t no hater, man, but that sh*t is wack with a cape on it. It’s super wack.”
East spoke about the controversy when he stopped by Math Hoffa's My Expert Opinion podcast and said he's still confused as to why he was called homophobic. [Jump to the 3:52-mark]
“I said I did not like ‘Old Town Road.’ One day, I felt a way," he explained. "I said, ‘I don’t like this record.’ You know their entire community ran down on me. I never said nothing about the [LGBTQ] community. I’m cool with the people in the community ... It’s like you can’t have an opinion on sh*t no more. You gotta know what comes with it. I didn’t say nothing about [Lil Nas X’s] preference as far as who he is as a person. I don’t give a f*ck about that.”
“I don’t like the song," East continued. "I don’t like the fact that it’s being played on New York radio where I know it’s a thousand n*ggas right in the town. When I go to Atlanta, the radio sounds like Atlanta.”
Were you surprised when East got so much backlash for saying that he didn't like "Old Town Road?"
