"There's a time a Drake feature helped Lil Baby, I think right now Drake might need a Lil Baby feature," CTG explained.
His comment was met by skepticism by his Breakfast Club co-host's DJ Envy and Angela Yee
"Let's be clear, a lot of the Drake records as of late haven't really taken off on the radio," CTG argued
Envy and Yee then explained that Drake's last two singles, "Laugh Now Cry Later" and "Toosie Slide" were both radio staples and that each went number one on Billboard.
"All I'm saying is Lil Baby is the highest-selling artist of the year. So people with a Lil Baby feature? Yes, that helps you a lot right now," CTG said.
CTG's take got so much pushback, he had to clarify it.
"Number 1). I'm slightly hating on Drake here per usual," he commented on DJ Akademiks. "Let's not act like a Lil Baby feature doesn't help everyone nowadays. I mean the guy had the best selling album in the country last year of any genre of music. Drake is still Drake but Lil Baby helps," he continued, though he made sure to note his opinion isn't actually a determining factor in Drake's success. "Don't listen to me tho I'm a find a reason to hate regardless," he concluded.
While Charlamagne is correct about Lil Baby being the best-selling artist of any genre of 2020, that had a lot to do with him releasing his album toward the beginning of the year and his fans hitting play on YouTube videos.
Few people paid for Lil Baby music. That may be where the music industry is heading. But there are still a few artists -- including Drake -- that folks will buck up for.
