There was a time when it seemed like 95% of the music on the radio was produced by The Neptunes, who's members are Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo. So Billboard recently named them the greatest production team of the 21rst century.
The two longtime friends received the No. 2 spot out of 50 producers, with Swedish pop producer Max Martin being named No. 1.
"Liquid guitars, clanging percussion, and the most intoxicating synth tones you've ever heard," wrote Billboard about The Neptunes' sound. "Usually kicked off with a four-stab count-off, and often punctuated with a keyboard sound like a dying firework — which played as big a part as anything in hip-hop taking complete control of popular music in the '00s."
Timbaland was Billboard's number 3, The Dream & Tricky Steward number 4, Mike Will Made-It 5, Kanye West 6, Just Blaze 7, Noah "40" Shebib 8, Jack Antonoff 9 and Tainy 10.
