June 4, 2010 is a day that Big K.R.I.T. will never forget. It was the day that he added himself to the Def Jam roster. He went on to release two slept-on albums, Live From The Underground and Cadillactica. July 5, 2016 is when he announced that he's no longer apart of the label.
"And at this moment right now, I want to share with you, that I am no longer with Def Jam," he tweeted.There's likely many reasons that K.R.I.T. decided to leave Def Jam. He didn't specify why, but if you look at his history with the label they haven't promoted him as well as they should have. Both albums sold just over 40,000 copies first week and he called them out after his sophomore album was under-shipped too.
Maybe Big K.R.I.T. just realizes that being indie will free him up to do whatever he wants. He doesn't have to wait to be told he can drop an album and being indie allows him to make more money per sale versus giving Def Jam a cut.
