After Puff Daddy signed DMX's Yonkers bros THE LOX to Bad Boy, he looked into signing X.

In an interview with N.O.R.E. and DJ EFN, X explained that his first meeting with Puff didn't go smoothly.

"One thing I respect about Puff is that at least he told me to my face what he thought," DMX recalled. "He said, his voice is too rough, you're not marketable.' Didn't like it. But I had to respect it."
So instead, X signed with Def Jam.

About three weeks after, Diddy came back to X, saying "Yo, I'll lace your pockets! I'll double what they gave you!"

But X had made up his mind to stay with Def Jam, who had shown more initial confidence in him. He went on to sell close to 30 million records with the label.
